What are daily calories?
Calories are a measure of energy. Your daily energy needs depend on factors such as age, body size, activity, health and individual metabolism. A calculator can provide a starting estimate, but it cannot measure your exact needs.
BMR vs TDEE: what is the difference?
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) estimates the energy your body uses at rest. Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) estimates energy used across a whole day, including activity. Many calculators estimate TDEE by multiplying BMR by an activity factor.
How to estimate calories in a meal
Check portion size first. Weighing ingredients, reading food labels and using a reliable food composition database can improve estimates. Cooking oils, sauces and recipe ingredients can change the final total substantially.
Understanding protein, carbohydrates and fat
Protein, carbohydrate and fat are macronutrients. Their appropriate amounts vary by age, activity, health and personal circumstances. Avoid treating generic macro splits as a prescription.
Why food calorie estimates vary
Food variety, ripeness, cooking method, water content, recipe and serving size all affect calorie values. Use product packaging for branded foods and reputable food databases for general ingredients.
